Summer Opportunities: THEARC's Organic Garden

Building Bridges at THEARC would like to announce the following vacant, seasonal positions at our Organic Garden:

THEARC's Organic Garden:

THEARC's Organic Community Teaching Garden was created in 2010 with the help of Building Bridges Across the River. It is a tool to train local residents about nutrition, urban farming and entrepreneurship. The garden consists of 22 vegetable and herb boxes, an orchard of 18 trees,and a new Hoop House for additional planting. During the summer months, THEARC's garden provides affordable, organic fruits and vegetables to residents of one of the largest food deserts in the city.

POSITION I: ORGANIC GARDEN ASSISTANT

This is an experience heavy opportunity for anyone interested in sustainability initiatives, and educational agriculture. Hands-on, outdoor garden maintenance is a MUST.

Responsibilities:

Garden Maintenance

*Soil preparation and maintenance.
*Seasonal planting of seed/seedlings during spring, late summer and early fall.
*Properly watering all plants as needed; checking ooze tubes regularly.
*Conducting daily pest checks. Research pests and propose solutions for pest management to supervisor.
*Pruning plants and vines as needed.
*Conducting regular weeding of garden beds, garden boxes, the orchard and fenced areas.
*Initiate plant harvests for weekly market.

Programming

*Coordinate necessary tasks with second assistant and supervisor.
*Attend and assist with community day activities and programs.
*Serve as a guide while conducting tours of garden grounds with occasional visitors.
*Maintain regular garden log and growth calendar.

Preferred incumbent will possess the following qualifications:

*High school student or high school graduate.

*Resident of Ward 7 or Ward 8 community.
*Interest in community sustainability and gardening.

POSITION II: ORGANIC GARDEN SALES REPRESENTATIVE

This is an experience heavy opportunity for anyone interested in sustainability initiatives, and educational agriculture. Hands-on product experience and working in outdoor marketing is a MUST.

Responsibilities:

*Weekly set-up and break down of market stand including arranging items for sale, creating and setting up signage for product names and
pricing, and cleaning displays and returning items to the storage shed.
*Weigh and package purchases for patrons.
*Assist with garden harvest as necessary.
*Assist with check-out as necessary.
*Conduct research of easy recipes and preparation for produce.
*Work with garden assistant to understand the produce grown in garden in order to answer possible questions from market patrons.
*Maintain regular market sales log.

Qualifications:

Preferred incumbent will possess the following qualifications:

*High school student or high school graduate.

*Resident of Ward 7 or Ward 8 community.
*Interest in community sustainability and gardening.
